Why Weapons Training Should Come Before Empty Hand

When prospective students visit STEALL Combatives for the first time, one of the most common questions is: “When do we get to the weapons?” The answer surprises them: Day One.

This reflects a core principle of the Filipino martial arts tradition validated over centuries of real combat: weapons are tools that extend the body. A practitioner trained with a weapon develops body mechanics that are superior to those developed through empty-hand training alone.

The Filipino Insight

The warriors of the pre-colonial Philippines understood intuitively what Western martial arts took centuries to discover: the rattan stick forces you to track range precisely, demands economy of motion, and builds patterns of attack and defense that transfer directly to the empty hand.

The STEALL Approach

Every STEALL student begins with the rattan stick — not because we expect them to carry sticks, but because the stick teaches the truth of fighting faster than anything else. By the time students reach empty-hand work, they already understand fighting at a structural level. The transition is from competent to dangerous.
